Controversial Non-Renewals of Professors at UBA

In a surprising move, four experienced professors at the UBA Psychology Faculty were not renewed amid accusations of political motives and labor instability. Concerns arise over job security in academia as tensions escalate following recent management changes.

Controversial Non-Renewals of Professors at UBA

The Faculty of Psychology of the University of Buenos Aires recently announced the non-renewal of contracts for four teachers with more than ten years of service. Cinthia Rolón and Eduardo Cossi were responsible for communicating this decision to Verónica Scardamaglia, Mercedes Ramírez, Fernando Stivala, and Dalila Fuxman, causing confusion by not providing any prior explanation. These dismissals have raised criticisms due to the lack of job stability in the faculty, which does not promote academic competitions and had already executed layoffs previously.

In this context, the layoffs occur during the transition process of Marcelo Percia to the chair, marked by mistreatment and violence. It has been emphasized that these separations are not related to enrollment figures, but seem to aim at eliminating certain theoretical-political positions developed over the years. The chair, which used to be a space of resistance and respect for academic freedom, is now shaken by disconnections affecting teachers close to Marcelo Percia.

The affected individuals are professionals with long-standing careers in the institution, some of whom depend entirely on this job for their economic sustenance. In light of this situation, the teachers have received support from various student organizations, as well as from the unions Feduba and AGD. The news has generated a wave of solidarity and questions about labor precarization and the injustices being experienced in the faculty.

In the words of Verónica Scardamaglia, Fernando Stivala, Mercedes Ramírez, and Dalila Iphais Fuxman, the affected teachers: "We are supported by the unions, accompanied by student solidarity, and seeking justice in the midst of this unjust situation." Despite adversity, they remain steadfast and are fighting for their labor rights and dignity in the academic sphere, countering actions that threaten to further precarize working conditions at the university.
